928 Air and Smog Pump Filters
1981 928

These were a simple 10 minute change.

The Air Filter (orange) is located at the rear of the engine compartment. The Air box is secured by 4 straps which needs to be detached in the front. One of my straps was broken, and patched together with a nylon tie (which seemed to be the favorite of a previous owner). I removed the air intake hoses ( just slides off and under the cross brace ) to give me more room to work. When I removed the old filter it revealed the intake stack that's connected to the air flow meter. The new filter just lays on top of the air box base and the top is replaced and the straps reattached.

The smog (air) pump filter is located at the front of the engine bay on the passenger side under the top radiator hose. The lid is held on by a wingnut. Unscrew the wingnut, remove the lid, and reach in and pull out the old filter. I used a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the debris at the bottom. Then inserted the new filter, replaced the lid, and screwed on the wingnut.

The cost of the air filter was $27 and the smog pump filter was $7.50.
